Description.
There are two pools about 25 ft in diameter and
about 40 ft deep near the limestone vent at the pool center. There is a
small dam at the west side of the first pool. Discharge is east and then
north through a second pool of similar dimensions and from there through
a marsh and to the Weeki Wachee River about 0.2 miles to the north. Reports
indicate that the vents are 4 foot diameter vertical shafts to a depth
of about 50 ft that then angle northward some 1,500 ft and attain a depth
exceeding 200 feet. Southwest Florida Water Management Disrict has bought
the property as continuing efforts to protect water reserves. Access is
(of course) closed for now. There has been a recent project to map the
system. Advanced Diver Magazine
has a free article online about the project here.
